The Sun in Our House - One

Bottom Studiobarton Photographs

This page contains a series of photos that attempt to capture fleeting moments when the sun strikes into our house and creates some interesting interplay of light and shadow. I started snapping these events simply in order to preserve them for a moment, so that I could see them again. Now, I think that it would also be good to share the pleasure with others.

Don't expect beautiful photographs, lovingly composed. The subjects are fleeting and I have no knowledge of the technicalities of photography. These are snapshots, a sort of family album of great 'light moments' in our house. I hope they will make you look again at your own house on days when the sun shines in.

Carrier bag in the sun   It's just a carrier bag glowing in the sun, but I love the texture and the brilliance of the colour. I also like the way it reflects in the door to the right.

A beam of light striking through the curtains   I was about to draw the curtains one morning when I noticed this dramatic light beam bouncing off the table leg.

Blue carpet and white walls   Blue carpet and white walls. Look at the gradation of brilliance on the carpet. I like the simplicity of this. Try closing one eye to see it as a 2D composition.

Reflected light shining into the stairwell   I took this picture originally for the pale light washing into the stair well. The result shows this blue margin, which I think is an artefact of the camera.

Coloured light on a duvet cover   The colour here is produced by a crystal that hangs in a nearby window. The patch of light also brings out the weave of the fabric.

Door edge and surround   This sharp, brilliant object could be a sword, but is in fact the edge of a door with the light sqeezing through the gap between door and frame.

Strange shadow   This finger of light curling round onto the ceiling is both strangely beautiful and slightly unreal.

Window frame shadows   These shadows are cast by the window frame of a north facing window. The light is reflected from the windscreen of a parked car. You can also see the shadows of plants from our front garden.

Spots of light on a skirting board   These are simply spots of light on a skirting board. I like the plainess of the carpets and walls overlaid by the exuberance of the light bursting in.
