 Out of the Deep

Bottom Contents Page Introduction

This widescreen light box contains a central block composed of three layers, each divided into sixteen cells. Coloured light shines into these white lined spaces giving each a separate colour that blends from one space to the next. This set of coloured cells is surrounded by a screen of pale turquoise tissue, fronting a curved, reflective backdrop, giving a sense of under water space - hence the name Out of the Deep.

This is a general view of the piece. The grey surround that forms the frame is the front of an MDF box containing two fluorescent tubes, one above and one below. Fitted into this frame is a construction of foam card and tissue paper. The central portion consists of three identical layers of card stacked on top of one another. The surrounding area is a screen of tissue on a foam card and balsa frame.   General view of Submarine

This side view shows the way in which the colours in the central section illuminate the interior spaces. Each of the sixteen cells is lit from above and below, and the light blends differently in each cell.   View of whole piece from the left

Looking directly into the centre section you can see the three layers and the way that the colours change as you go down into the piece. See also the backdrop that is a reflective surface, slightly crinkled and over laid with a web of fine fibres.   Central block

Here the photo concentrates on the middle four cells where, instead of looking down to the back drop, you are looking into mirrors that direct your view up or down toward the gels that are the source of the colours.   Looking in to the central block

Here is another view of the cells and the way the colours blend from one cell to another. There are vertical walls between cells, but no horizontal walls, so the light can penetrate both downwards and upwards through the piece.   Angled view of central block

I like the subtle blending of colors that is best seen when viewing from an angle like this. The light is soft, and light from the coloured gel at the top of each set of cells encounters a different coloured light from the gel at the bottom.   Colour variations in the central block

This photo gives a good view of the texture of the backdrop as seen in the depths of the right hand cells. This backdrop extends out from behind the central section and forms a curving surface behind the side screen.   Central block and right end of screen

In the photo this view just looks flat, but in reality you can both see the screen and look through the screen to the deep blue/turquoise interior space. It gives the whole work a sub-aquatic glow.   Screen

The work is made of foam card covered with tissue paper and situated within an MDF frame containing two fluorescent tubes. Dimensions: 530mm x 335mm x 98mm. Frame dimensions: 690mm x 495mm x 118mm.
