 Beyond The Screen

Bottom Contents Page Introduction

This widescreen light box contains an illuminated red screen pierced by openings that look onto bright purple/blue squares of light. The initial idea came whilst watching the BBC's Ten O'Clock News, where a distant red back drop contains bright squares of blue light.

In this piece the challenge is to create a sense of depth, that goes beyond the confines of the frame. The central holes in the red screen appear to provide a view through the wall on which the frame is hung and on to brightly lit squares of colour. The photo shows these as white, but in reality they are a deep purple/blue. The side slots in the yellow areas give a deeper view still of complex interior spaces divided into various smaller areas and crossed by diagonal partitions.   General view of Ten O'Clock News

Here you can see the three layers that comprise the front of the piece. The purple strips at top and bottom, the central red screen and the yellow side panels. You can also see some of the internal structure.   Centre section viewed from below

Looking into one of the yellow side screens you can see the illusion of depth created in the work. Here there is an internal corridor crossed by diagonal struts. You can glimpse a further internal view at an angle through the red screen.   Left end

This is the equivalent view at the other end of the work. The yellow screen is opaque and lit from the front, which brings out the texture of the surface. The red screen is lit from back and front. Light pases through it to show the fibrous quality of the material.   Right end

This photo gives a very clear view into the interior and you can see various struts and diagonal planes which form the internal spaces. All are lit from the periphery by lights in the frame.   Centre section viewed from an angle

Here is another view giving and idea of the complexity of the interior space. I want people to look into the work and feel that there is a real internal world, that there are spaces inside that extend beyond the limits of the frame.   A view inside the work

This alternative view of the left hand yellow screen shows how every space, seen in every direction has another apparent space beyond it.   Left hand end - interior

Lastly this photo, looking down into an opening, shows the texture of the surface which extends throughout the work.   Interior texture

The work is made of foam card covered with tissue paper and situated within an MDF frame containing two fluorescent tubes. Dimensions: 530mm x 335mm x 98mm. Frame dimensions: 690mm x 495mm x 118mm.
