Barton P H O T O G R A P H S Light Theatre |

This is an experiment based on the photos I took of my light works. The aim there was simply to document the work in a way that could be presented on a web page. It being understood that the photos could never substitute for direct experience of the work itself. However some of the photos were interesting in their own right and it occurred to me that one could make objects solely as subjects for photography. These objects would be different in kind from the 3D works. They would be designed to be viewed only from one angle and could be varied to accomodate the needs of photographic composition. The outcome of this line of thought was the Light Theatre, which is like a child's toy theatre with sets and movble lights designed to provide interesting illuminated scenes for the camera to portray. I am not sure where this takes me and the pictures below are simply a first attempt. Any thoughts on where it might go would be gratefully received. |

Layers of tissue paper are stretched over balsa wood frames and lit from the sides. The central portion is back lit using three different coloured lights projected through a grid.
This has the same arrangement of frames and tissue, but far simpler lighting. You can see the bare bones of the set with a single red light illuminating the space between the flat screens. All the surfaces in these photos are in fact white. | ![]() |

You can see that this is the same set with different lighting and a slight change in the spacing of the screens. I am trying to achieve a sense of hidden spaces, spaces that lie between the screens and just out of reach of the camera.
I am trying here to make each screen stand out from the others, mainly through the use of coloured light. The final screen at the centre of the picture is more complex, with a projected pattern to draw the eye. | ![]() |

I imagine that beyond the frames there is a space or a corridor that can be glimpsed, but not seen or explored.
Here a row of flats is set up to give the feeling of space receding into the picture. One of the problems with the photos is that they do not convey the sense of space that is there in the 3D Works. | ![]() |

This picture is again using a series of flats to achieve depth, but it has also been messed around with to increase the saturation and shift the hue from blue toward purple. I'm not sure about it.
This corridor is open ended and has two screens beyond it, one just an open frame work and the other covered with tissue. Light is projected onto the back of the second screen. The red glow comes from a fluorescent tube covered with a red gel, placed beneath the set. | ![]() |

The corridor again, but this time with a lighter touch, giving more sense of a space to be entered.
