 Ghost Pillar

Bottom Contents Page Introduction

This light box has been constructed to gain an illusion which is similar to an old theatre illusion called Pepper's Ghost. Previously I have used glass spheres as the basis of this illusion, here I am using a column made from a highly reflective metal mesh.

These photos give you a general view of the outer appearance of the work, but it is very difficult to photgraph the illusion itself.   General View

This is another view of the box within which the illusion is contained. As you can see the light sources change colour.   View From Above

Here you get a reasonable take on the the illusory quality of the pillar that appears to be located within one of the cells of the work. It is translucent and is in fact not there at all.   Inside

The changing colours of the box as a whole differ from the changes that affect the column which helps to accentuate its otherness.   Inside

The work is made of foam card covered with tissue paper and situated within a perspex box mounted on an MDF base. It is lit by three LED units. Dimensions: 235mm x 235mm x 350mm.
