 Ghosts in a Box

Bottom Contents Page Introduction

I call this work Ghost because it contains a version of an old theatre illusion called Pepper's Ghost. The aim here is to make objects appear to occupy a space that is in fact empty.

The work is made of foam card and tissue paper and is illuminated from above, by ten small LED's and from below by two larger LED's providing focused lights similar to spot lights. It stands 61cm high, including its light box base, and is 28cm square.

This whole piece is built around the idea of Pepper's Ghost, an illusion used to give the impression of ghosts moving on stage in the same space as 'live' actors. In this piece there are no actors, simply a series of spheres, which appear to occupy spaces in the structure that are empty. The work consists of nine columns laid out in a 3x3 grid. Visual access is by a series of windows in the outer shell. The viewer sees both the actual cells formed by the structure and the illusory spheres projected into those cells. The illusion is complicated and enhanced by the use of internal mirrors to extend and complicate what is seen.   General view of Ghost
