This piece began with the idea of a theatre auditorium viewed through the frame of a theatre box. I wanted to create small spaces that provided a view into a much larger and yet inaccessible space. In the work this got translated into the ten central windows, which look through into a larger space beyond. There is in fact no larger space, but an illusion of space is created, a space that as the work progressed came to be more like an underwater cavern than a theatre auditorium. |

This is a general view of the piece. The grey surround that forms the frame is the front of an MDF box containing two fluorescent tubes, one above and one below. Fitted into this frame is a construction of foam card and tissue paper. The front part, in various shades of purple, consists of two columns of illuminated cells flanked by translucent panels. Behind is an interior world of reflective surfaces. | ![]() |
Moving closer you can see that the central columns consist of boxes with front and back windows, allowing the viewer to see through to the world beyond. Holes pierced in the side screens give another view of this interior space. | ![]() |

Moving closer again we are faced with the limitations of photographing illuminated objects. You can see the front openings and beyond that in a lighter colour the edges of the rear opening. However, beyond that the view is simply of a glistening turquoise surface, whereas in reality the human eye can discern an internal structure in the space beyond. | ![]() |
By shifting the angle I can give you a more three dimensional view of the front cells and a glimpse again of the interior of the piece. As the work is essentially about the interior, photos can only offer an inadequate guide. | ![]() |
Moving on to the side screens, you can see the texture and the structure of the screen. You can also see through, where the screen is left open, to view fragmentarey glimpses of the internal space. | ![]() |
Here again I have shifted the camera sideways in order to show the depth of the space behind the screen and the edge of the next internal division. | ![]() |
It is difficult to give an adequate impression of the internal character of these light box works. So here I have settled for another general view, but this time from above which at least shows how the columns and the screens are arranged as separate elements. | ![]() |
And lastly on this page a general side view again to show the structure more clearly and just to give a general impression of the external appearance of the piece. | ![]() |
The work is made of foam card covered with tissue paper and situated within an MDF frame containing two fluorescent tubes. Dimensions: 530mm x 335mm x 98mm. Frame dimensions: 690mm x 495mm x 118mm. |
