In this box the light source is built into the centre of the display. There is no separate light box sitting underneath. This looks like a good idea, neater, simpler, etc. The problem is heat. All light sources give off heat and too much heat is not a good idea in a structure made of card and tissue paper. I used to use fluorescents to reduce this problem, but even they need a separate container, preferably with ventilation holes. Here the light source sits in the middle of the structure contained in a perspex box, so no ventilation and the light is very close to sheets of tissue paper. This is made possible by the use of LED's. They are not totally cold, but they are much cooler than any other lamp.

The idea for this box came from a building I saw which had horizontal vanes forming the front wall. This gave an obscured view of a large entrance hall and in this hall there appeared to be a tapestry or large flag hanging from the ceiling.   General view

In my design the banner is replaced by a framework containing coloured gels. This frame occupies a centre-front position and is in constant contrast with the surrounding horizontal and vertical screens.   General view - blue

As you will have noticed the colours change. The central LED light source has a colour changing function, which lends colour to the screens and the vanes. Meanwhile the central banner is nearly always displaying a contrasting colour or array of colours.   General view - pink

This is another of those works where the perspex cover is fitted tightly to the display surfaces. The cover then sits down onto an MDF base. There is no need for a separate box to contain the light source, so the whole external surface can be lit.   Green view

The top of the box is not pierced at all, so you get no light coming through here, as the emphasis is on the front view.   Blue view

It is difficult to see, but there are in fact three layers between the outer perspex box and the light. First there are horizontal vanes, then tissue paper screens with vertical elements and finally another set of horizontal vanes around the light itself.   Red view

Here, where the light source is almost white, you can see more clearly the arrangements of the banner. It is a shallow box with vertical slit openings cut into it which enable us to see the back surface consisting of red and yellow strips of coloured gel..   View from above

The work is made of foam card covered with tissue paper and situated within a perspex box mounted on an MDF base. It is lit by one LED unit which sequences between a fixed range of colours. Dimensions: 305mm x 305mm x 325mm.
