During the 2010 Canterbury Festival, I showed my light boxes in the Undercroft at the Eastbridge Hospital. This is situated right in the centre of the city at 25 High Street. Follow this link to see some photos of the exhibition. | ![]() |
The Eastbridge Hospital was founded in the 12th Century to provide shelter for pilgrims coming to Canterbury to visit Becket's tomb. Later it became an almshouse providing accommodation for ten poor people of Canterbury. It continues to provide a home for a number of older residents, but is also open to the public, who can view its refectory with early 13th century mural, the undercroft and two chapels. | ![]() |

The Undercroft is a remarkable space, some 13 metres long by 7 metres wide. The roof is supported by a series of gothic stone arches that have been distorted out of shape over the years since it was built. The picture shows the view from the entry door straight down the central gallery. On the left is another similar space and on the right a series of alcoves separated from one another by stone walls. |
This view shows one of the side alcoves, buttressed on either side by massive stone pillars. These spaces proved ideal for displaying free standing light boxes on plinths. Each box had its own contained space where light from one could not interfere with light from another. The alcoves were also big enough for people to move round the boxes and see them from every side. | ![]() |
Brother Austin, The Master of the Eastbridge Hospital, gave his permission for two events in the Undercroft during the Canterbury Festival. In the first week there was an exhibition of wood and glass work and in the second week I put on a show entitled LIGHT WORKS with various light boxes, both free standing and wall mounted. |

![]() The exhibition is now over and I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who helped make it possible. In particular I must thank: Brother Austin, the Master of the Eastbridge Hospital, for giving his permission for us to use the undercroft, Ian Smith for all his advice and assistance in setting up the exhibits, Phil the electrician for making the light works light up, and my invigilators Rachelle, Craig and Matt for keeping an eye on things and putting up with the cold. I have selected some photos of the exhibition and you can see them by following this link.
